Greetings and daily phrases

What you will say twenty times a day

These are fixed phrases. Learn them as sounds first, grammar later. Bow slightly with the formal ones; a nod is enough with friends.

ohayou gozaimasu

Good morning. (polite)

Casual: おはよう. Used until about 10am.

konnichiha

Hello / good afternoon.

The は here is the particle, said 'wa'.

konbanha

Good evening.

oyasumi nasai

Good night.

Casual: おやすみ.

arigatou gozaimasu

Thank you. (polite)

Casual: ありがとう. Past: ありがとうございました (for something already done).

sumimasen

Excuse me / sorry / thank you (for trouble taken).

The most useful word in Japan. Use it to get a waiter's attention.

gomen nasai

I'm sorry. (personal apology)

Casual: ごめん / ごめんね.

itadakimasu

Said before eating. 'I humbly receive.'

gochisousama deshita

Said after eating. Thanks for the meal.

ittekimasu / itterasshai

I'm off. / Take care (said to the person leaving).

The pair you will say every morning at the door.

tadaima / okaeri

I'm home. / Welcome back.

Polite: おかえりなさい.

hajimemashite

Nice to meet you. (first meeting only)

yoroshiku onegaishimasu

Please treat me well / looking forward to working with you.

Ends every introduction. No English equivalent; just say it.

osakini shitsurei shimasu

Excuse me for leaving before you. (leaving the office)

daijoubu desu

It's fine / I'm okay / no thanks.

Also a soft way to refuse: 「袋は?」「大丈夫です」 'Bag?' 'No thanks.'

اردو

From Urdu

すみません does the work of معاف کیجیے AND شکریہ when someone has gone out of their way. よろしくお願いします is closest to آپ سے ملاقات کر کے خوشی ہوئی plus 'please look after me'; there is no exact Urdu, so learn it as a fixed sound.

ไทย

From Thai

いただきます / ごちそうさま have no Thai equivalent; ทานข้าวกันเถอะ is an invitation, not a thanks. おかえり / ただいま is like กลับมาแล้ว but said every single time, by both sides.
